In a developing story regarding alleged child abuse, police in Guatemala have conducted raids on five regional offices of the British aid organization Save the Children. This significant operation, which took place on a Monday, has raised serious questions about the organization’s activities in the country.
Local media reports indicate that prosecutors in Guatemala reached out to U.S. authorities in April to investigate the possibility of the organization being involved in smuggling children across the border. Save the Children has acknowledged that they were aware of certain activities at their offices but has firmly denied the prosecutors’ allegations.
The ongoing investigation is being led by prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche and Guatemala’s attorney general, Consuelo Porras. Notably, both have previously faced sanctions from the United States and the European Union due to actions perceived as threats to democracy.
