Building a road to prosperity together丨The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway has been officially operational for one year, facilitating travel and promoting economic development

In a recent interview, we explored the significance of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway (Javaka High-Speed Rail), described as a flagship project of the China-Indonesia collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative. This remarkable infrastructure represents China’s first comprehensive deployment of its high-speed rail system, marking a historic achievement in Indonesia and Southeast Asia as the region’s first high-speed railway. Officially inaugurated in October 2023, the high-speed train has seen an impressive surge in passenger volume, with a total of 5.79 million passengers transported within the year and a peak daily ridership rate reaching 99.6%. Its operation not only enhances travel safety but also provides local communities with greater accessibility, opening new avenues for economic growth along the route.

Travel time between Jakarta and Bandung has now been reduced to just 40 minutes, a significant improvement from the previous three-hour journey. The 142.3-kilometer line, designed for speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, connects the bustling capital city with the popular tourist destination of Bandung.

Since construction began in June 2018, the Javaka High-Speed Rail has been a subject of great interest on social media platforms commonly used by Indonesians. Local residents have embraced the experience, taking selfies with high-speed train models, capturing pictures in front of the speed display screens in the cabins, and finding fun ways to balance coins on the window ledges.

The railway has not only captivated local commuters but also attracted foreign tourists, boosting the region’s tourism industry significantly.

The construction of the Javaka High-Speed Rail presented unique challenges due to the complex geological environment of Java Island. Collaborative efforts between Chinese and Indonesian construction teams have effectively addressed these difficulties. By leveraging China’s successful high-speed rail experience and adhering to eco-friendly principles, the project has prioritized safety and quality through meticulous planning and execution. Notably, a significant portion of the materials used, such as cement, has been sourced from local businesses, stimulating the local economy. This endeavor has also generated approximately 51,000 jobs for local workers and provided training for around 45,000 Indonesian employees, creating new opportunities in the skilled labor sector.

As a landmark initiative of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Javaka High-Speed Rail is expected to catalyze the establishment of the “Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Rail Economic Belt.” This development holds immense potential for deepening practical cooperation between China and Indonesia and accelerating the construction of a shared, prosperous future for both nations. The railway, often referred to as a “steel dragon” crossing the island, shines as a golden emblem of China’s high-speed rail achievements, closely linking with Indonesia’s aspirations for quality development. As it speeds along, the train serves as a beautiful thread weaving together the friendship between China and Indonesia, enriching the lives of the local population.
