On October 20, the inaugural Distinguished Authors Conference of the Zhejiang Publishing Group was held in Hangzhou. During the event, the “Dunhuang Studies Publishing Center” was officially inaugurated. This newly established center has enlisted five expert scholars—Rong Xinjian, Hao Chunwen, Zhang Yongquan, Zhao Shengliang, and Liu Jinbao—as academic advisors. It aims to leverage the resources of the China Dunhuang and Turpan Studies Association to bring together leading Dunhuang experts from around the world, publish cutting-edge research findings in the field, and promote the heritage and innovation of Dunhuang culture.
The Zhejiang region has long been revered for its rich cultural heritage. The Zhejiang Publishing Group, deeply rooted in the local landscape, has seen generations of devoted publishers collaborate with esteemed scholars, forging a unique and vibrant path in the publishing industry.
Despite the physical distance of over 6,000 kilometers between Zhejiang and Dunhuang, their connection spans a millennium. The commitment of the people of Zhejiang to the preservation and study of Dunhuang documents has remained steadfast since the discovery of the Mogao Caves in 1900. From the contributions of Chang Shuhong to Fan Jinchao, Zhejiang has played a critical role in the establishment and evolution of the Dunhuang Research Institute and in the broader field of Dunhuang studies.
As a significant facet of traditional Chinese culture, Dunhuang culture possesses immense historical and cultural significance. As a key player in the publication of Dunhuang studies, the Zhejiang publishing sector is dedicated to further exploring, preserving, and advancing Dunhuang culture. They have released over twenty notable works, including “Dunhuang Art Treasures from the Cave of Scriptures (British Museum)” published by Zhejiang Ancient Books Publishing House and “Only To Guard Dunhuang in This Life” by Zhejiang People’s Publishing House.
In a bid to honor the tradition of “Zheshui Fuwen,” and to celebrate the outstanding authors of the Zhejiang Publishing Group, the organization has initiated the first “Wenlan Award.” This award recognizes those whose heartfelt and dedicated works have significantly contributed to the Zhejiang publishing industry. It serves as an encouragement for these authors to strive for excellence and to create more influential, culturally cohesive, and spiritually uplifting works.
The name “Wenlan” embodies a hope for the continuation of cultural legacy and the creation of new chapters in this modern era.
Additionally, during the inauguration ceremony, six pilot projects, including “The Southern Yangtze: The ‘Fengyue’ Trilogy,” “Model of the Times: Xu Limin,” “Zhejiang Chronicle,” and “Hangzhou’s Unforgettable Delights,” were collectively signed. These projects aim to present Chinese stories with greater brilliance and charm through the “Zhejiang Window.”
