On October 22, during an afternoon meeting in the Kremlin of Kazan, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in discussions marked by their countries’ long-standing partnership.
As President Xi noted, this year commemorates the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Russia. Over these decades, the two nations have navigated challenges and have established a model of interaction characterized by “non-alignment, non-confrontation, and not targeting third parties.” He highlighted the commitment of both sides to fostering a spirit of perpetual friendship, comprehensive strategic collaboration, and mutually beneficial cooperation. This ongoing partnership not only strengthens the enhancements in practical cooperation across various fields but also injects significant momentum into the modernization and revitalization of both nations, thereby benefiting their peoples and contributing to global justice and fairness.
President Xi also pointed out that amidst a complex and rapidly changing global landscape, the enduring friendship between China and Russia remains steadfast. He emphasized the importance of continuing to promote the Belt and Road Initiative and deepen integration with the Eurasian Economic Union to support high-quality economic development in both countries.
Looking ahead, Xi stated that next year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations’ founding and the victory in World War II against fascism. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and major global powers, both countries are committed to deepening their strategic cooperation and enhancing coordination within multilateral frameworks, including the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. They aim to uphold an accurate historical perspective on World War II and to steadfastly protect an international system centered around the UN.
Furthermore, President Xi recognized the BRICS cooperation mechanism as a vital platform for emerging markets and developing countries. He expressed appreciation for Russia’s work as the presidency of the BRICS and looked forward to collaborating with other BRICS leaders to explore future development within the mechanism and to promote strategic cooperation among member nations.
In turn, President Putin reflected on their recent celebration of 75 years of diplomatic ties, acknowledging that Russia and China have become comprehensive strategic partners in the new era. He reaffirmed that their relationship continues to thrive based on principles of equality, mutual respect, and benefit. Both nations are actively advancing practical cooperation across various fields, including the successful hosting of cultural events during the year of Russian-Chinese cultural exchange.
Looking to the future, Putin expressed a desire to deepen collaboration and support each other’s development agendas, especially as they approach the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II—a moment he emphasized that both nations should jointly commemorate given their significant sacrifices for the antifascist cause. He stressed the importance of maintaining close high-level exchanges and strategic communication in international affairs to uphold global justice and stability. Additionally, he expressed gratitude for China’s robust support during Russia’s presidency of BRICS and pledged to work together to ensure the success of the upcoming summit of expanded BRICS leaders.
The two leaders also delved into discussions on significant international and regional issues of mutual concern, with senior officials including Cai Qi and Wang Yi participating in the meeting.
