Former Vice President of China Development Bank Wang Yongsheng was sentenced to 12 years in prison in the first instance of bribery case

On October 21, 2024, the Jilin Intermediate People’s Court in Jilin City publicly announced its verdict in the bribery case involving Wang Yongsheng, the former member of the Party Committee and Deputy Governor of the China Development Bank. Wang was sentenced to twelve years in prison for bribery and fined 2 million yuan. Additionally, all assets obtained through bribery, along with their derived profits, were ordered to be confiscated and turned over to the national treasury.

The court’s findings revealed that between 2010 and 2019, Wang Yongsheng exploited his positions as the Party Secretary and President of the China Development Bank’s Liaoning Branch, as well as his roles in the central bank, to provide assistance to various entities and individuals regarding loan financing, bond purchases, and personnel arrangements. He unlawfully accepted bribes totaling over 23.5 million yuan.

The Jilin Intermediate People’s Court determined that Wang’s actions constituted a particularly egregious case of bribery and warranted legal consequences. However, due to his willingness to confess fully upon arrest, proactively disclosing additional bribe-related facts not previously known to the authorities, showing remorse, and actively returning all illicit assets, the court recognized mitigating circumstances for a lighter sentence. Consequently, the court handed down the aforementioned judgment.
