Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Railway launches -cold protection and winter- mode

On October 24, reporters learned from the China Railway Qinghai-Tibet Group Co., Ltd. that with the arrival of the Frost’s Descent solar term, the central areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have already entered “winter mode,” seeing an increase in snow and ice. In response, the Qinghai-Tibet Group has initiated comprehensive measures to ensure the safe operation of railway services during winter.

The company is working closely with meteorological departments in Qinghai and Tibet to continuously monitor weather conditions, temperatures, snowfall range, and intensity. They are proactively issuing warnings and risk assessments, while coordinating efforts to clear snow and ice in regions affected by heavy snowfall. Each unit is expected to communicate effectively, with a lead organization overseeing the removal and treatment processes to ensure efficient and coordinated responses.

In preparation for the harsh winter conditions, the Qinghai-Tibet Group is conducting autumn inspections and evaluations of equipment, focusing on maintenance for vulnerable sections near lakes. They are intensifying repairs to locomotives and rolling stock, while ensuring rigorous inspections for rail fractures, the sealing of outdoor equipment, and the removal of ice in tunnels. The company is also replacing heating components for snow-melting devices at 58 high-altitude stations to enhance the resilience of equipment against ice and low temperatures. Given the heavy workload for year-end technical improvements and major repairs, the organization is strategically utilizing time slots for construction and enhancing collaboration to mitigate freeze damage and improve equipment quality.

To bolster on-site safety management, the Qinghai-Tibet Group has appointed specialized managers to guide operations through adverse weather, transportation organization, and safety management for construction. They are utilizing remote monitoring systems to increase video surveillance frequency in snowfall areas, enhancing oversight to ensure the safe handling of trains, passenger boarding and alighting, equipment operation, and personal safety during harsh weather. Comprehensive winter safety education is underway, with targeted training on snow removal and rail fracture management to enhance risk identification and emergency response among frontline workers. A dedicated team has also been established to conduct regular checks on critical equipment in key areas, ensuring the implementation of preventive measures.

The company is closely monitoring winter passenger and cargo transport efforts, ensuring effective heating measures across stations and vehicles. They are covering key passages with anti-slip mats, placing additional safety signage, and deploying more service personnel to guarantee the safety of travelers. In line with the winter heating and material supply demands, they are focusing on the transportation of essential goods such as electricity, coal, fertilizers, and grain, working hard to secure the supply of materials vital for the nation’s economy and people’s livelihoods.
