On October 25, the People’s Court of Lijiang’s Gucheng District in Yunnan Province issued a judgment in a criminal case with civil implications. The defendant, Wang Jiawen, was convicted of child trafficking and sentenced to nine years and six months in prison, along with a fine of 5,000 yuan. Additionally, he was found guilty of escaping from custody, receiving another sentence of three years and six months, which will run concurrently with a previously imposed sentence for theft that was not fully served. In total, he will serve 16 years and six months in prison and pay an additional fine of 5,000 yuan.
The court ordered Wang Jiawen to pay a total of 30,000 yuan in damages to the claimants Chen and Shen and another 30,000 yuan to claimants Qing, Li, and Liu within 30 days of the judgment coming into effect.
In a background interview, we learn that in 1984, Yu Huaying met Wang Jiawen while traveling in Dali, and the couple later married. Their daughter, Wang Meihua (a pseudonym), was born in January 1987. However, in 1992, Wang Jiawen was arrested for theft, and in February of that year, he escaped from prison.
From 1993 onward, Yu Huaying, along with her husband or her lover Gong Xianliang, was involved in the trafficking of 17 children, who were taken from the southwestern region of China to Handan, Hebei. In 2004, while committing another crime in Yunnan, the couple was apprehended. They concealed their true identities and were sentenced to eight years in prison under false names.
In July 2023, Wang Jiawen was captured by police in Yunnan. On July 10, 2024, he was transferred to the prosecution in Lijiang Gucheng for examination. The trial concerning his charges of escaping custody and child trafficking commenced on September 19, 2024, in the Gucheng District Court of Lijiang.
