Anniversary of the Israel-Kazakhstan war, global demonstrations promote armistice, US reporter sets himself on fire outside the White House in protest

On October 5th, a significant gathering took place in Times Square, New York City, where thousands united to show their support for Palestine. Participants waved flags and called for an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza, coinciding with the upcoming anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, which occurred on October 7, 2022. This attack led to retaliatory strikes that intensified a wider conflict throughout the Middle East. In the lead-up to this anniversary, anti-war demonstrations advocating for Palestinian civilians flared up across the globe, with an estimated 40,000 individuals marching in London, chanting calls such as “Stop Bombing Civilians.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed confidence in the Israeli military’s actions over the past year, claiming they have “completely changed the reality on the ground” and asserting that Israel “will emerge victorious.” On the other hand, Hamas released a video commending what they referred to as a “glorious” operation from a year prior.

Protests also erupted in major global cities, including Paris, Rome, Manila, Cape Town, Berlin, Mexico City, Madrid, Sydney, and Washington, D.C. Demonstrators across these cities urged an end to the violent clashes that have characterized the past year in Gaza and the broader Middle East.

In Washington, protesters voiced their concerns regarding U.S. support for Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon. In Times Square, individuals donned traditional Palestinian keffiyehs and chanted, “Gaza, Lebanon, you will rise up in resistance; we stand with you,” while holding signs that demanded a weapons embargo on Israel.

A shocking incident occurred outside the White House when American photojournalist Mina set fire to his left arm in a desperate protest against what he perceives as the media’s failure to provide an objective account of the Gaza conflict over the past year, claiming it has led to “misinformation.” Reports from the Daily Mail indicate that he suffered severe burns.

In Rome, approximately 6,000 protesters marched, challenging a ban on gatherings and resulting in clashes with police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons. In Berlin, around 1,000 demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and proclaimed slogans about “a year of genocide.” Madrid saw about 5,000 people rallying with calls for a boycott of Israel.

In Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population, at least 1,000 individuals protested outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta on October 6, demanding that the U.S. halt arms supplies to Israel. A similar scene unfolded outside the U.S. Embassy in Manila.

In London, the atmosphere grew tense as some individuals waved Israeli flags in response to the pro-Palestinian demonstrators. According to Reuters, 15 arrests were made during the October 5 demonstrations, though specific details about the individuals involved remain unclear. In Berlin, pro-Israel activists protested against the rising anti-Semitism in Germany.

Statistics from the Gaza Health Ministry report that nearly 42,000 Palestinians have died over the past year, with a significant number being women and children. This ongoing humanitarian crisis has forced nearly all of the 2.3 million Palestinians in the region to flee their homes, leading to severe food shortages.

As the anniversary of the conflict approaches, the Israeli military has heightened its alert status. Spokesperson Richard Hecht indicated that troops are ready for reinforcement and warned of possible attacks within Israel on the seventh.
