LIRS Chair Emerges Most Outstanding Public Sector CEO of 2024

In an exclusive interview with Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja, Mr. Ayodele Subair, the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), shared insights following his recent recognition as the Most Outstanding Public Sector Chief Executive of the Year at the Peak Performer FEST 2024.

Subair received this esteemed award at the Peak Performer Festival, which took place at the MUSON Centre in Onikan, Lagos. The event brought together key figures from both the public and private sectors to celebrate excellence and innovation. Reflecting on the honor, Subair expressed that this recognition highlights his unwavering dedication to excellence within the public sector.

“During my tenure, we have achieved significant milestones by implementing transformative policies aimed at enhancing our agency’s service delivery,” Subair stated, emphasizing the crucial role of innovative strategies in improving revenue collection and engaging taxpayers.

The LIRS was a standout participant at the festival, clinching four awards in various categories. These accolades included being recognized as the most outstanding revenue collection agency of the year, as well as honors for its initiatives focused on women-friendly revenue collection and community engagement.

While accepting the awards alongside LIRS directors, Subair dedicated these accolades to Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the city’s taxpayers. “This acknowledgment drives our motivation to pursue even greater accomplishments,” he remarked. “It’s uplifting when our hard work is recognized.”

He also stressed the vital role of taxpayer support, urging residents to fulfill their tax responsibilities. “Many people don’t see the connection,” he explained. “When they enjoy efficient roads, street lighting, and security, like in the US or the UK, it’s crucial to understand that these services require funding, and that funding comes from taxes. Achieving such standards in Lagos depends on everyone doing their part.”

Subair acknowledged the challenges surrounding tax compliance, noting, “It’s no secret that people everywhere are reluctant to pay taxes, and Nigeria is no different. That’s why we invest time in advocacy to help our citizens understand the relevant laws and procedures.”

He highlighted that paying taxes is a fundamental aspect of the social contract between the government and its citizens, enabling the provision of essential infrastructure and services. “We must be transparent about how tax revenue is spent,” he asserted. “Just look around—there are remarkable projects unfolding across Lagos, from the Blue Line and Red Line to extensive road upgrades and enhanced security measures.”

Dr. Abiola Salami, the Convener of The Peak Performer Festival, added insight into the significance of the awards, noting that the initiative was designed to honor individuals and organizations making meaningful contributions in Nigeria. “Despite the challenges our country faces, there’s much to be proud of,” he said, highlighting the numerous positive developments emerging throughout Nigeria and across the African continent.
