On October 6th, State Senator John Liu hosted a memorial service in Queens to celebrate the life of his late father, Joseph Liu, who recently passed away. The event turned into a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on Joseph Liu’s immigrant journey as he sacrificed a stable life in Taiwan to provide a better future for his children in America. About 400 attendees, including New York politicians and family friends, came together to honor his 88 years of life.
The service began with remarks from the youngest son, Edward Liu, who infused humor into his memories of his father. He recalled how, despite his father’s strict parenting style, it was all in an effort to encourage independence. “I remember when I was seven and desperately wanted to watch a Yankees game. My dad told me I had to save my allowance first before he would take me,” he shared with a smile.
Next, Robert Liu, the middle son, took the stage to underscore the role their father played as the family’s backbone. He reflected on the values of loyalty, responsibility, and dedication that Joseph Liu imparted to him and his brothers. In a poignant moment, he invited all military personnel present to rise and honor their father, which created a deeply moving ambiance.
After the Liu brothers’ heartfelt tributes, Congresswoman Grace Meng addressed the gathering, conveying condolences from the political community and presenting an American flag in tribute to Joseph Liu. She noted that Joseph’s immigrant story resonates with many Taiwanese-American families, emphasizing how his contributions have profoundly impacted both his family and the wider community.
The memorial drew numerous notable figures, including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, along with other state senators and assembly members, all coming together to pay their respects to Joseph Liu’s legacy.
To add to the emotional richness of the service, the Taiwanese American Senior Center Choir performed a touching rendition, honoring a man who devoted much of his life to his family and community.
