On October 16, a memorial service was held for the late Ethel Kennedy, widow of former U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, at the Cathedral of St. Matthew in Washington, D.C. The event brought together a notable assembly of political figures, including current and former Democratic presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton, all of whom delivered heartfelt tributes.
The private ceremony, titled “Celebration of the Life of Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy,” was attended by numerous dignitaries alongside members of the Kennedy family. Ethel Kennedy passed away on October 10 at the age of 96, making her the oldest living member of the storied Kennedy political family, known for her unwavering commitment to human rights advocacy.
Reflecting on Ethel’s legacy, former President Obama described her life as filled with “tragedy and heartbreak that surpasses what most of us can bear,” while former President Clinton spoke of her enduring positivity. President Biden recalled how Ethel was a source of support when he first entered politics and encouraged him during challenging times when he considered stepping away from public life.
Prominent Democratic leaders also paid their respects, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Secretary of State John Kerry, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who referred to Ethel as a “national treasure.”
Martin Luther King Jr.’s son, Martin Luther King III, shared memories of the close ties between their two families, recalling how Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel reached out to comfort them after his father’s assassination. He expressed deep admiration for Ethel’s remarkable courage and dignity following her husband’s tragic fate.
The ceremony celebrated life rather than mourning death, featuring performances by renowned artists such as Kenny Chesney, Sting, and Stevie Wonder. Ethel’s grandchildren took turns sharing their memories and honoring their matriarch.
Ethel suffered a stroke in her sleep on October 3 and passed away from complications a week later. Her life was marked by deep family ties, as she gave birth to their 11th child just six months after Robert’s death in 1968, when he was assassinated during his presidential campaign.
Afterward, she founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization, which is recognized for its efforts in promoting free speech around the globe. Following her husband’s assassination, she raised their 11 children alone, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who recently ran as an independent presidential candidate. Ethel also established the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, advocating for gun control and human rights initiatives.
