A Mississippi woman, Krystal Nailer, has decided to take legal action after a troubling experience during her stay at the STRAT Hotel in Las Vegas, where she claims she was severely bitten by bedbugs. Nailer reports suffering from extensive itching, pain, and permanent scarring and is now seeking compensation.
Nailer alleges that due to the hotel’s negligence, she has already incurred over $15,000 in medical expenses, with more costs anticipated as she pursues a lawsuit against the hotel and its parent company, Stratosphere Gaming LLC, along with Golden Entertainment.
Her attorney filed the lawsuit on October 8 in the Eighth Judicial District Court of Clark County. According to the complaint, Nailer checked into room 11059 at the STRAT Hotel on October 16, 2022. Just two days later, she woke up scratching due to severe itching. Upon inspection, she discovered painful welts on her left leg and buttock, along with a bedbug visible on her bed. Nailer insists that prior to this hotel stay, she had never encountered bedbugs or been bitten by them in her home.
After reporting the issue to the front desk, a hotel staff member came to inspect her room and offered her medication in response to her report.
While the STRAT Hotel declined to comment on the ongoing case, they provided a statement from the Nevada Resort Association published in February to USA Today. The statement emphasized their commitment to the health and safety of both guests and employees.
“The hotel has approximately 155,000 rooms and hosts 41 million visitors each year, with only four rooms reportedly affected over the past five months across millions of nights,” the statement claims, emphasizing the rarity and isolated nature of such situations. “The low number of incidents reflects the comprehensive and proactive health and safety measures, as well as pest control protocols, that Las Vegas resorts have implemented.”
The association further clarified that bedbugs can be transported anywhere through luggage and clothing. Once a staff member identifies that a guest has been affected by bedbugs, that guest is promptly relocated to a new room, while the impacted room is taken out of service for pest control treatment.
