On October 15th, a production launch ceremony was held for the first phase of the Northern Rare Earth Green Smelting Upgrade Project in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia. This significant event marks the official operation of the world’s largest rare earth raw material production base.
We spoke with a representative from Northern Rare Earth, officially known as China Northern Rare Earth (Group) High-Tech Co., Ltd. Established in 1961, the company is a subsidiary of the Baotou Steel Group and is considered the birthplace of China’s rare earth industry. It made history in 1997 by becoming the first rare earth company to be listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
According to their official announcement, the project began construction in April 2023 and saw participation from over 90 units. After more than 440 days of hard work, the first phase has reached successful completion and is now operational.
The representative explained that this initiative involves replacing outdated production lines, representing a significant advancement in productivity. Their new production processes, equipment, and environmental standards are now industry leaders. The facility is designed to be flexible and can easily switch product specifications based on customer needs, allowing it to meet a variety of downstream material demands. Through a combination of independent innovation and technology introduction, Northern Rare Earth aims to develop a modern, world-class rare earth raw material production enterprise that embodies digitalization, intelligence, and sustainability.
