Hamas plotted to destroy Israeli skyscrapers after 911 attacks

The Washington Post has uncovered significant revelations regarding Hamas’s plans against Israel, particularly focusing on the Moshe Aviv Tower, Israel’s second tallest building. According to documents obtained from the Israeli military, Hamas had reached out to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei soliciting $500 million in aid and training for 12,000 armed militants before their surprise attack on Israel last year. Additionally, Hamas collected an astonishing 17,000 satellite images and photographs of Israeli cities and infrastructure, contemplating a “9/11-style” attack on the Moshe Aviv Tower in Tel Aviv, indicating their intent to eradicate Israelis from the face of the earth.

These findings come from a 59-page collection of Arabic correspondence and plans, which is part of the thousands of documents the Israel Defense Forces have claimed to have found since their ground invasion of Gaza began on October 27 of last year. Among these documents is a detailed presentation outlining potential attack strategies against Israel, complete with annotations and illustrations.

One of the reports, prepared in 2022, spans 36 pages and discusses various offensive options against Israel from multiple fronts. The targets range from military command centers to shopping malls, indicating a broad scope of intended attacks. This briefing is derived from a “large database” that includes over 17,000 images, encompassing satellite images as well as drone-captured visuals of Israeli urban areas and landscapes, and even information gleaned from social media. Some details pertain to the layouts of air force bases and military facilities, while others describe the flight paths of commercial flights to and from Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv.

A striking aspect of the plans includes the destruction of the Moshe Aviv Tower. The documents indicate that this 70-story skyscraper is considered a key target. One passage highlights the significance of its potential destruction, stating, “If this tower is destroyed in any way, the enemy will face an unprecedented crisis, akin to the Twin Towers crisis in New York.”

The Azrieli Center, which houses multiple skyscrapers, shopping centers, train stations, and theaters, also appears on the target list. The documents note its proximity to military headquarters, implying that the collapse of such structures could crush military facilities underneath.

However, the documents reveal that Hamas has yet to determine how to successfully attack these buildings, as they are “struggling to find a mechanism to destroy this tower.”

Other attack plans mentioned include converting trains transporting fuel into “mobile bombs” to detonate in major cities, modifying motorcycles to operate on rail tracks, and retrofitting fishing boats into high-speed assault vessels to deliver militants and explosives to Israeli ports. The documents also suggest Hamas has developed effective methods to turn vessels into bombs.

One of the more unusual proposals involves reviving ancient chariots to transport personnel and weapons. The presentation describes a chariot operated by three drivers and pulled by horses, capable of navigating rugged terrain. Compared to motorcycles, this mode of transport would offer a “quick and lightweight mechanism” with diminished heat and noise. It’s noted that Hamas extensively utilized motorcycles in their October 7 attack last year.

Additionally, Israeli forces discovered letters from Hamas leader Sinwar to Khamenei detailing an agreement for a $500 million aid package to be distributed monthly over two years, alongside training for 12,000 militants in Iran. Sinwar further pledged to eliminate Israel within two years upon receiving the assistance.

An Israeli security official who reviewed these letters and documents remarked, “Hamas is determined to erase Israel and the Jewish people from the map. They are making efforts to draw Iran into direct conflict, yet Iran is not fully prepared for such a confrontation.”
