The 7th International High-level Forum on Sustainable Urban Development was successfully held in Wuhan

Recently, the National Development and Reform Commission’s Urban and Small Town Reform and Development Center, in collaboration with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and the Wuhan Municipal Government, successfully held the 7th International Forum on Urban Sustainable Development.

The forum focused on the theme “Advancing Sustainable Development with High Quality: Innovating Urban Modernization Practices.” During the opening ceremony, notable figures including Shao Xinyu, a member of the Hubei Provincial Committee and the Executive Vice Governor of Hubei Province; Sheng Yuechun, Deputy Secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Committee and Mayor of Wuhan; Chen Yajun, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Development and Reform Commission and Director of the Department of Development Strategy and Planning; and Ms. Odyssea, a representative from the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, delivered their addresses.

In the results announcement session, Gao Guoli, Director of the National Development and Reform Commission’s Urban and Small Town Reform and Development Center, and Chen Jinchao, a member of the Wuhan Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of Wuhan, presented the “Belt and Road 20 Cities Sustainable Development Initiative” and the “Belt and Road Sustainable Cities Alliance Resilient City Wuhan Initiative,” respectively. Keynote speeches were given by Peng Sen, President of the China Economic System Reform Research Society; Yang Baojun, Chairman of the China Urban Planning Society and a national engineering surveying and design master; Zhang Yuyan, Deputy Director of the International Studies Department of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Chairman of the National Global Strategy Think Tank; Mr. Alexandros, President of the East-West Urban Governance Institute and former Deputy Mayor of Athens, Greece; and Mr. Rajendran, Mayor of Penang, Malaysia.

Throughout the forum, several discussions took place on topics such as “People-Centric Approaches to Urban Resilient Low-Carbon Development,” “Digital Economy and Smart Urban Governance,” a roundtable on “Collaborative Win-Win for Open Economic Development and the Belt and Road Sustainable Cities Alliance,” and “Green Finance Supporting Urban Sustainable Development.” Attendees actively exchanged innovative practices in urban sustainability, shared experiences in modern urban governance, and explored recommendations for advancing high-quality sustainable urban development. After the forum, participants took part in group visits to inspect Wuhan’s automotive and smart manufacturing industries, electronic information sector, and ecological governance efforts.

Over 400 representatives from cities involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, international organizations, renowned experts and scholars, as well as domestic and foreign enterprise representatives attended the event.
