On October 24, the Chinese Mission to the European Union responded to the European Parliament’s resolution concerning Taiwan, stating that China has lodged a stern representation to the European side. A spokesperson urged uninformed politicians to refrain from standing in the way and to abandon their fantasies of using the Taiwan issue to hinder China’s development and prevent its reunification efforts.
When asked for a comment on the European Parliament’s recent resolution regarding Taiwan, the spokesperson expressed strong indignation and firm opposition to the Parliament’s actions, which disregarded China’s resolute objections and proceeded to pass the resolution. The spokesperson accused the resolution of maliciously distorting United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 2758 and characterized it as a blatant provocation against facts, international law, and the post-war international order.
The spokesperson emphasized that Taiwan’s status as part of China has long been a historical fact and an international consensus, and this understanding served as a crucial political premise for the adoption of Resolution No. 2758. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed this resolution, restoring all rights of the People’s Republic of China in the UN, recognizing the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China, and expelling representatives from Taiwan. This resolution fundamentally resolved the issue of China’s representation in the UN from political, legal, and procedural standpoints, dismissing any notion of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” There is no gray area or ambiguity on this principle.
The spokesperson reiterated that the Taiwan issue pertains to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, being at the heart of its core interests. The one-China principle is universally recognized as a fundamental standard in international relations and serves as the political foundation for China’s relationships with countries worldwide, including the EU. It is a red line that cannot be crossed. The Taiwan issue is entirely an internal matter for China, and it does not permit any foreign interference.
The spokesperson urged the European side to uphold its political commitments, implement the one-China principle, and exercise caution in handling the Taiwan issue, thereby safeguarding the political foundation of China-EU relations. They warned uninformed politicians to refrain from obstructing China’s progress and to give up any illusions about using the Taiwan issue to prevent China’s reunification. The spokesperson affirmed that China will undoubtedly achieve complete reunification, and Taiwan will inevitably return to the motherland, a historical trend that cannot be impeded by anyone or any force.
