In an exclusive interview, Kuni Tyessiin in Abuja highlights an urgent message from the National Examinations Council (NECO) directed at school owners and stakeholders regarding the practice of enrolling candidates for its examinations by proxy.
Last year, NECO launched e-Verify, an online platform designed for the confirmation and verification of NECO results. The Council is urging the public to be aware that any certificate claiming to be issued by NECO that cannot be verified through the e-Verify platform is fraudulent.
Azeez Sabi, the acting Director of Information and Public Affairs at NECO, issued a statement addressing these concerns. He noted that the Council has detected a troubling trend of fraudulent practices linked to proxy registrations. This, he explained, has resulted in identity theft and the circulation of fake results among candidates.
Sabi emphasized NECO’s commitment to eliminating examination malpractice. “We’ve implemented several measures to combat impersonation across all our exams,” he stated.
Among these measures are the introduction of a Biometric Data Capturing Device, the use of customized answer booklets, and the inclusion of candidates’ photographs and dates of birth on the official certificates.
Sabi called on state Ministries of Education and school proprietors to ensure that only the accurate personal details of genuine candidates are utilized for registration in NECO examinations.
Additionally, the statement highlighted that candidates found guilty of impersonation in the recently released 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal have had their results withheld. This action forms part of NECO’s comprehensive strategy to combat all forms of examination malpractice.
