2024 elite track and field reserve talent training camp opens in Nanchang, Jiangxi

On October 23, the “Duowei Cup” 2024 Elite Training Camp for Track and Field Talent, organized by the Chinese Athletics Association, opened at the Jiangxi Olympic Sports Center in Nanchang High-tech Zone.

This intensive 10-day program represents the highest standard of training organized by the Association this year, with over 70 athletes, more than 40 coaches, and 30 industry experts from around the country in attendance.

During the opening ceremony, Chen Ying, head of the youth department at the Chinese Athletics Association, emphasized the importance of this camp for young athletes, noting that they are in a critical stage of physical development. “It’s essential to not only focus on building fundamental physical skills but also to hone technical movements. Coaches must remain patient and avoid rushing for immediate results. Flawed techniques can lead to fleeting success, while correct techniques lay the foundation for long-term development,” she stated.

Chen further highlighted that the Association has enlisted the best experts across the nation to guide the training camp, ensuring that the athletes receive top-notch physical and medical support. The camp incorporates specialized physical training and testing, technical analysis and assessment, on-field guidance from experts, group discussions for clarification, and theoretical insights into psychological and physiological aspects, as well as injury diagnosis and treatment. “This training camp is a wealth of learning opportunities. I urge both coaches and athletes to make the most of it by engaging actively, thinking critically, and continually refining their training philosophies and methods,” she encouraged.

Tao Tao, director of the Jiangxi Provincial Track and Swimming Sports Management Center, mentioned that the primary goal of the camp is to foster more exceptional talent for Chinese athletics and elevate the overall performance of the sport in the country. “In this new landscape, it’s imperative for elite reserve talents in athletics to seize opportunities and face challenges head-on. We must take advantage of these chances to emphasize talent cultivation, providing more promising young athletes with the chance to rise,” he stated.

Following the opening ceremony, famed Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian engaged in a face-to-face exchange with the young athletes in the training camp. He shared his journey of persistence in sprinting over the past 20 years, recounting his decision to risk changing his starting foot and the series of injuries he faced that nearly led him to retire, yet he ultimately chose to push through and repeatedly overcome obstacles.

“Keep in mind that the 2028 and 2032 Olympics will be your time to shine. You will become the stars you dream of,” Su Bingtian encouraged the young athletes, inspiring them to absorb all they can from the training camp, with hopes to see them contribute significantly to the future of athletics in China.
