In an insightful interview with local farmers and business leaders, we delved into the burgeoning quinoaflower industry in Jieshou Village, Ruichang City, Jiangxi Province, which is rapidly becoming a vital part of the local economy.
“Last year, I leased 20 acres to grow quinoaflower, and the profits were quite good. This year, I’ve expanded my planting area to 30 acres,” shared Wang Zhongdong, a local farmer. The green quinoaflower seedlings in the village are flourishing, releasing a gentle fragrance, and attracting attention as they hit their peak growth just before the Spring Festival—a popular time for harvesting this nutritious wild vegetable.
Quinoaflower thrives in moist environments and can be prepared in various delicious ways, such as in salads or stir-fried dishes, making it a beloved addition to many local tables, especially in stir-fries with preserved meat. The village has adopted a “company + farmer” model to optimize their agricultural practices, which has significantly increased residents’ income.
Ke Baozheng, another villager working at the quinoaflower planting base, expressed the convenience of the job: “Working close to home allows me to care for the elderly and children; my wife and I earn over 50,000 yuan a year.” The industry’s growth has not only boosted the collective economy but also created numerous employment opportunities for the community, emphasizing the need for labor at various stages from seedling cultivation to harvesting.
Looking ahead, the local government plans to promote green planting techniques to reduce chemical fertilizers and pesticides, further enhancing the quality of quinoaflower and developing it into a distinctive industry that benefits both the village’s economy and its residents.
Shifting gears, we also visited the production workshop of Jiangxi Heizhima Food Technology Co., Ltd. There, a large sesame sorting machine caught our attention, as workers efficiently sorted fresh sesame seeds. The aroma of rich sesame paste filled the air from the adjacent processing area.
“The company not only sells Ruichang sesame and rapeseed oil but also specializes in deep-processed sesame products like roasted seeds and sesame paste, achieving an annual sales volume of around 50 million yuan,” explained Ye Lixing, the company’s general manager. The business has been working diligently to enhance its sesame industry chain, backed by local agricultural experts and technology hubs, aiming to transform “small sesame” into a “big industry.”
Ye further noted, “We are committed to an integrated industrial development path to boost product competitiveness. In the future, we plan to enhance smart management across our ten-thousand-acre sesame planting base while improving product quality. Additionally, we aim to create an agricultural demonstration site that combines leisure, tourism, and educational opportunities, helping to generate employment for more villagers and contribute to rural revitalization.”
This narrative not only highlights local perspectives but also paints a picture of how agriculture can serve as a catalyst for economic development in rural communities.
