Xi Jinping meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin

On October 22, in Kazan, Russia, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kazan Kremlin.

During the meeting, President Xi expressed his pleasure in responding to President Putin’s invitation to this historic city and attending the 16th BRICS Leaders’ Meeting. He noted that this marks their third meeting this year. “About 400 years ago, the ‘Tea Road’ connecting our two nations passed through Kazan, bringing tea from China’s Wuyishan region to countless households in Russia,” President Xi remarked.

Earlier this month, Xi and Putin exchanged congratulatory messages to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Russia. Reflecting on their journey, President Xi emphasized that the China-Russia relationship has faced challenges but has steadily progressed, achieving a series of groundbreaking outcomes. The two nations have charted a path for neighboring countries characterized by “non-alignment, non-confrontation, and not targeting third parties.”

In the new era, President Xi expressed their mutual commitment to strengthening China-Russia relations. He stated they uphold principles of lasting friendship, comprehensive strategic cooperation, and mutually beneficial collaboration, continuously deepening these ties across various fields. This cooperation aims to drive the development and modernization of both countries and contribute significantly to the well-being of their people while safeguarding international equity and justice. “Currently, the world is undergoing unprecedented changes, with complex international dynamics at play. However, I firmly believe that the profound friendship between our nations will remain unchanged, alongside our commitment to addressing global challenges and serving our people,” he asserted.

He highlighted the BRICS cooperation mechanism as a crucial platform for emerging markets and developing countries, fostering unity and collaboration. “Tomorrow, we will hold the BRICS Leaders’ Meeting, the first summit following the expansion of our group, which is vital for advancing the ‘BRICS-plus’ cooperation,” he noted, praising Russia’s efforts as the host nation.

Looking ahead, President Xi expressed his eagerness to engage with President Putin and other leaders in finding common ground and sending a strong message of solidarity and cooperation. “Together, we will enhance strategic collaboration in various fields of BRICS countries, seek new opportunities for the Global South, and contribute even more to building a community with a shared future for mankind,” he concluded.
